Cartoon Smart Blender Basics 1
Are you wondering how I am doing with blender ? Not that bad actually! I just got finished with the part 1 of 2 of the Basics 1 tutorial from CartoonSmart. I went from knowing nothing at all about blender to actually starting my first creation by following along.
This was the image that was given with the tutorial, I wanted you guys to see this, this is how it all starts as a rough draft.
Ok, I am getting close, The tutorial teaches you this is box modeling, man does it really look boxy, It almost looks like a human like gator to me.
Just think I went from downloading the program to completing part 1 of Basics 1 in about 3 hours.. I stopped the video tutorial a few times so I could catch up but so far it’s been a great tutorial. I was also taking notes, on the short cut keys, I think that help me learn the short cut keys even more. I know it helped me to take a look at my cheat sheet, instead of rewinding the video every 5 minutes.
There is one part in the video the instructor shows you how to use the short cut keys for changing the view, using the keypad on the right hand side of my key board, where if you don’t have the number lock on, it will actually change the screen view the first time but after that, you can press all the number keys in the world, your not going to follow along with the video. I was pulling my hair out, trying to figure out what I done wrong, to include restarting my computer a few times.. This is probably why it took me so long.
I just got finished with the second part of Blender Basics 1 and I have to tell you I have learned alot from CartoonSmart about Blender. If your just starting out learning Blender, I recommend Blender Basics 1. Here are my results from the tutorial:
Ok, it’s starting to look like a mouse now, sorta? Anyway it’s alot further than I would have gotten with a little help.
Ok, now we have a bit of color, it looks a lot better now. It’s all starting to come together.
This is a normal render with color.
This is an outline with a little bit of light generation to make it look more cartooned.
I might not be the best 3D modeler in the world yet, but does my mouse kinda look like a dog ? Hum, maybe it’s me but I really did not notice it until i started to post the pictures, oh well it’s to late now..
The second part of the tutorial took me about 4 hours, so I have about 7 hours total in my time. One thing I think the tutorial is missing or maybe I missed something is how to group objects. Because when I move the character his eyes and nose do not move with him. I hope this is covered in the next tutorial.
Over all I think this tutorial was great! It was a pleasant Introduction to the Blender Experience. Eventually I want to know more about making faces, eyes that blink and the whole nine yards, but I guess I got to crawl before I can walk!
